"Lose weight"... is it possible that on a subconscious level people fear "losing" or "loss" ?
Q. fear of losing or loss results in people not being able to "lose" weight? Is their any evidence you can think of that might support this? Thanks :-)

A. Yes it's true. I know of someone who lost alot of weight in the summer but didn't realize how much until "fall" came and she tried on her jeans. They practically fell right off her. She got scared but didn't know why and immediately started eating as before. She said that it was as if she became a different person and she didn't like it.

How many pounds lost is classified as "extreme weight loss"?
Q. I have read that you can get stretch marks from extreme weight loss. I plan on losing about 25 pounds...am I at risk for getting more (than I already have)??
Asked by callybumble - Mon May 3 21:42:10 2010 - Diet & Fitness - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Hello. Many people are interested in this answer so I will give you the truth once and for all. The truth is ye extreme weight loss can give stretch marks. But, if you are only planning on losing 25 pounds I wouldn't consider this extreme. Extreme would be anything over 50-75 pounds and even then the stretch marks would be minimal. Extreme weight loss more is for people looking to losing over 100 pounds in most situations and often times you will see many of these people with stretch marks. The most important thing is a new healthier body!

A. First let's learn how fat gain occurs, which is being in a hypercaloric state for a period of time. If your BMR(basel metabolic rate) is 1500 and you have a daily energy expenditure of another 250 that leaves you burning 1750 calories a day. If you eat exactly this amount(called eucaloric state) then you will not gain but maintain weight. However if your eating say 2000 calories when your requirement is 1750 calories/day then you are 250 calories over(this is called being in a hypercaloric state). Now over time 250 adds up... These excess calories usually are converted and stored in fat cells(fat cells hold stored energy). 1 pound of fat has roughly 3,500 calories, so stay in a hypercaloric state for 2 weeks you should gain about 1lbs(give… [cont.]

Do those weight loss "remedies" really work, like apple cider vinegar, honey and cinnamon, etc.?
Q. I've seen a lot of things online about these home remedies to help you lose weight. I read how it works, basically to fill you up on empty calories so you don't overeat - I understand the general idea of it. But I wanna know if anyone has actually done any of these and what results they had. Thanks!

Do you trust "weight loss" articles in mass media?
Q. I've been researching topic of "weight loss" for 10+ years and tried different approaches. I finally lost 90+ pounds by sticking with the scientific research. The advice provided within most slick articles within Internet and magazines, in my opinion, is absolutely worthless or misleading. One of my pet peeves is "hired gun" writers who will take on any topic for a price, even if they have no expertise. They exude confidence that with research they can write slick "intelligent" articles. The problem is people treat this incorrect information as fact and make important lifestyle choices with wrong assumptions. Here is a perfect example: "10 New Weight Loss Myths and Facts" The author cites celebrity… [cont.]

I've hit a weight loss "plateau". WANT to lose 10 more lbs in a month, what more to do?
Q. I've lost 10lbs easily in 1 month with a good diet and little to no exercise. This time I added exercised to my diet and I can't seem to lose anymore weight. Yes I understand that I may be building muscle mass, but there has to be some other way where I can get out of this plateau and lose a little more weight within a month. I lost 10lbs in April, stopped my diet for a month, and started it back in June. I've gained 2lbs, which I'm not worried about, yet it's been over a month since I started exercising while back on my healthy diet as I was in April and the weight just wont budge. I'm 5'6, 135lb, my BMI is normal. If you wouldn't tell great looking people at the gym to stop working out because they look healthy already and are fit, then… [cont.]

A. Though I would never discourage someone from exercising just because they are at a healthy weight, it's really funny how our bodies work. You have done all the right things: eating healthy, increased intensity, increased strength training. All of the good things to do when we are in a plateau. Though this may sound a little crazy, maybe you aren't in a plateau at all. Because your BMI is normal, I would have no reason to think that you have a disorder or problem that would prevent you from losing weight. And actually, when people lead healthy lifestyles, it has been found that the body can be stubborn about losing more weight. The thought is that it simply won't, because it doesn't need to. I completely understand your frustration and… [cont.]

A. Our body goes into conservation mode when we eat a low calorie diet every day. This is an age old response to guard against starvation. There are two things you can do to 'trick' your body into losing weight again. First, vary your calorie intake day to day. Have a high day one day, and a low day the next. Even a change of 300 calories can make a difference, but it can be more, depending upon how much you now weigh and what your requirements are. Second, boost your exercise. This will help burn the fat. To burn fat you need cardio, brisk walking, swimming, jogging, bicycling, etc. If you are doing 30 min, step it up to 45, then eventually an hour. It will get your body losing again. And finally, has anyone noticed the spammer with the… [cont.]

A. Do NOT take diet pills! They are dangerous!! Last year I was visiting my parents and took diet pills on top on my exercise routine and normal diet. I was 26 at the time, 5'11, 180 lbs. By week three I was sick. I had diarrhea, dry heaves, dizziness, headaches, and a general feeling of being sick. I thought I had caught the flu or something. I had lost 13 lbs in 4 days. One morning I told my mom I didn't feel good. My vision kept blacking out and I felt (for lack of a better way to say it) stoned. Later that afternoon I was walking from the bathroom to my bedroom (a 5 foot walk) and I passed out. I was rushed to the hospital emergency where they did a bunch of tests on me. Worried about a friend and their "weight loss"?
Q. I'm quite concerned about a mate of mine who *was* slightly overweight, but went totaly insane with losing weight to the point he's 5 kg's underweight (going by the bmi). I doubt it's anerexia etc. but it's worrying that he keeps telling me he wants to lose "just a few more kg's" What can be done about this? I don't think it's a disorder but it's not healthy or normal, and i don't know what I can do.

A. It is obvious that weight has become an obsession with your friend, that he is so intent upon losing the excess poundage that he is carrying it too far. If you go without food for a certain length of time, you lose the fierce hunger and, although your body cries out for food, you can ignore it. The big problem in dieting is not losing the weight. Determination, adherence to a strict regime of one kind or another will work. The biggest hurdle is keeping it off. Your friend knows this, so he is still dieting long after he could ease up a bit. I think the answer lies in nutritional education. Give your friend some pamphlets and books on proper diet. Show him that eating rationally will keep that weight off, without the problems of starvation.… [cont.]

Dose Glipizide for Type 2 Diabetes cause weight loss?"?
Q. My grandmother is on Glipizide and appears to be losing weight. She is thin and dose not need to lose weight.
Asked by comegowithme22002 - Fri Jul 31 10:36:57 2009 - Diabetes - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Most diabetic medication cause a weight GAIN, because the body is better using the blood sugar -- and that includes converting excess to fat. Your grandmother needs to consult with her doctor. weight LOSS is a sign of majorly out-of-control diabetes. if your grandmother is "non-compliant" (not following doctors orders concerning diet and exercise) then the Glipizide may not be working, and her diabetes is getting WORSE.

At what point does "unexplained weight loss" become "substantial unexplained weight loss"?
Q. I know that one of the symptoms of some illnesses is "substantial unexplained weight loss". I've lost 10-15 pounds recently without trying at all, but I'm also aware that my lifestyle has changed a lot recently (done with college, basically), so I'm not sure whether to even pay attention to it. I weighed around 135 before college and got up to 175 during college, and now I'm at 160, so I'm thinking I have a long way to go before I need to start worrying or caring. Over about two months, Max, so a fair amount of time. And nope, no risk for HIV here I'm glad to say.
Asked by Anonymous - Wed Jul 16 14:57:06 2008 - Men's Health - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Sounds like your diet or your activity level has changed since you are no longer in college. If you were only 135 before you started college, then it sounds like you don't have anything to worry about. On the other hand, a substantial weight loss is one of the signs of HIV. If you participated in any homosexual activities or intravenius drug use while in college, then HIV is a definate possibility. If you didn't, then I'm sure you are OK and the weight loss is just being caused by your change in lifestyle.
