A. People do not grow once their growth plates are fused - but males can grow until they are 20, give or take a year either side. Acromegaly is rare, you would be under the care of a doctor. It occurs when the body produces too much growth hormone. Treatment - remove the pituitary.

A. Gigantism is caused by an overproduction of HGH (human growth hormone) in an adult. It is much less common than the other extreme, where there is too little HGH. HGH is produced by the pituitary gland which can be easily ablated with a course of highly focused radiation. The problem with pituitary abaltion is that the gland is also responsible for production of a host of other hormones in the body. Once the gland is ablated,a patient would require very close medical supervision for hormone replacement.

What gene does gigantism affect?
Q.
Asked by - Mon Nov 28 17:06:56 2011 - Anthropology - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Like almost everything else there is no one gene that controles this, gigantism can be caused by numerous things. The question should maybe rather be what gene affects gigantism. Genes are like a chain, each one is linked to another and genetic traits can lay with in many genes. Gigantism is caused by a tumour of the pituitary gland that makes it put out more growth hormone than normal. It is thought that in some cases this is linked to a mutation on the AIP gene that encodes proteins that will have an effect on the pituitary gland. Hope this helps!

How should I start a paper about Gigantism?
Q. I need to write this paper and I have no idea how to start it.
Asked by Alayna - Fri Feb 26 17:24:40 2010 - Homework Help - 1 Answers - Comments

A. A novel approach would be to get your pencil really sharp and, begin your report by writing really, really small. As you pencil starts getting dull, gradually increase the size of your writing until others can read your report from thirty feet away. Not only will you have written a report about gigantism, but you have given a first rate example of how it looks! Now you have accomplished two things. Surely your teacher will give you extra credit, and all the 'smart kids' will know that you are the boss! Take the day off, you've earned it!!

Do you agree with gigantism or pituitary tumor?
Q. I keep coming back to gigantism, but really think tumor. Increase in Growth Hormone, decrease in Thyroid, cortisone and testerone. Any thoughts?

A. Gigantism can be caused by a tumor. It may increase growth hormone but not enough to have the symptoms associated with giantism. Hypo in other hormones can happen as the tumor damages other parts of the pituitary. If this is the case with your labs you should see a good pituitary endocrinologist.

I have gigantism and I never stop growin, isnt growth based on genetics?
Q. I always grow 3 inches ever since I was 8 years. Now Im 6'8 and I weigh 265 lbs caus of my big ass bones. Im now 14 and Im definitely trying out for basketball even though I suck because size matters after all such as dunking and trucking. But iam worried and I want to stop growing. Why is life like this? Short people want to be tall and tall people want to be short. Fat people want to be thin and thin people want to be fat. Life sucks.

A. Gigantism or acromegaly is caused by a benign tumor pressing against the adrenal gland causing it to secrete growth hormones which results in unchecked growth. If your family has a history of being normal sized and you are the only one that is as tall as you are, I would certainly have it investigated medically.

What is the difference between some one with gigantism that is 7ft and over and a naturally tall person that?
Q. height? I heard some people are naturally tall. The tall chinese guy was told by his doctors that nothing is wrong with him and he is naturally tall.
Asked by Bob j - Sat Sep 12 21:28:51 2009 - Other - Diseases - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Technically, people with gigantism are naturally tall as well. However, gigantism is typically caused by one of two things: an overproduction of growth hormone (a lack of sufficient growth hormone causes Extremely Short Stature - what people often incorrectly refer to as proportional dwarfism), or a mutation of NSD1. I don't know that there is an actual height by which gigantism is judged, but rather, it is determined by standard deviatiations against the average. That is to say that as the average person grows taller, so does the marker for gigantism. A height of 7 ft. is certainly tall, but it isn't so unusually tall that it would be considered a giant. Gigantism isn't the only trait causing excessive height, either. Marfan Syndrome also… [cont.]

Are there ever any size conditions (dwarfism, gigantism) or disorders in other animals/ species?
Q.

A. Mutations do occur, but, as Darwinian evolution would suggest, those with genetic mutations yielding unfavourable traits will die off, hence why you don't see many animals like this.
